Public administration is a field in which leaders serve communities to advance the common good and effect positive change. In addition to non-management positions, careers in public administration include roles as directors, financial managers, human resources specialists, city planners, policy analysts, communications specialists, organizational development specialists, budget analysts, grant writers, and program managers. Public administrators can take the reins at any level of government—including local communities—and they often work with elected officials who set policy priorities and pass laws that give them direction on what their agencies should accomplish. They also provide oversight so that their organizations are effectively managing the resources they have available.
