BARD (Bangladesh Academy for Rural Development)

The Bangladesh Academy for Rural Development (BARD) is an autonomous government institution. It works for the local public to develop rural areas through training and research activities. In 1959, it was established in Comilla. At that time, it knew as the Pakistan Academy of Rural Development (PARD). Dr. Akhtar Hameed Khan was a founder Director and pioneer of BARD. It has actively and largely contributed to the achievement of its goals.

Projects or Programs of BARD:


BARD offers training for official and non-official members of public and private organizations, which is the main objective. It works for rural development. Through the particular three projects, it reaches this objective. Such as:-

  1. Firstly, Thana Central Co-operative Association (TCCA)
  2. Secondly, Thana Training and Development Centre (TTDC); or Works Programme (RWP)
  3. Thirdly, Thana Irrigation Programme (TIP).

  • Secondly, the model has three characteristics, for instance, elitism, centralism, and paternalism.
  • Thirdly, the model works with the critical and chronic problems of rural Bangladesh.
  • Fourthly, the model walks to innovate the different models.
  • Fifthly, the fifth model has evolved with a combination of communication and knowledge training systems.
